I was 10 years old when Ben 10 came out. I remember watching the first episode when it premiered and being really enthralled by how cool the concept was, but little did little me know that I was witnessing the start of one of the longest-running, most popular, most prolific, most successful franchises in Cartoon Network’s history, and among television cartoons from the 2000s in general. Ben 10 was Cartoon Network’s first action-oriented franchise that wasn’t episodic, but told an ongoing story showing Ben Tennyson come into his own as a hero capable of wielding the powers of anywhere between 10 to 10,000 aliens to protect the Earth – and eventually, the universe.
What was most remarkable about Ben 10 was how it continued telling that story across multiple installments over the course of ten years. From Ben 10 to Alien Force to Ultimate Alien to Omniverse, across four series, 227 episodes, and 2 movies, we watched Ben grow from a kid to a young adult. For kids like me who were the same age as Ben when the show started, it was like we were watching him grow up and mature in real time as we were growing up and transitioning from kids to adults as well, and learning to take on all the responsibility that entails. That was partly what made Ben 10 so meaningful for the viewers who grew up with that original run of shows – that, and all the varied and creative alien designs, exciting action scenes, imagination-capturing worldbuilding, an ever-growing cast of eclectic characters, and an ever-evolving out-of-this-world storyline that kept building on itself and growing in scale and stakes year after year.
With Ben 10 soon to be celebrating its 20th anniversary later this year, I’m definitely in a wistful and nostalgic mood to revisit it. Luckily, Warner Bros. Discovery will be putting out a complete dvd boxset on May 13th containing the entirety of the original run of the franchise – Ben 10, Alien Force, Ultimate Alien, Omniverse, and the tv movies Secret of the Omniverse and Destroy All Aliens. That is A LOT of Ben 10 – 10 years worth of the franchise to be exact! If you’re like me and nostalgic to revisit the original run of the series, or want to finally check it out and see why it’s endured 20 years later, then this boxset promises to be a universally great pickup that’ll provide hours of entertaining intergalactic alien action and adventures.
